DIPESCA — Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulation Directorate (MAGA)
- • A sport fishing licence from DIPESCA (under the Ministry of Agriculture, MAGA) is required for boat-based sport fishing; charter fleets out of Puerto Quetzal and Iztapa normally arrange them for visiting anglers.
- • Billfish are protected by law: sailfish and marlin must be released — Guatemala's Pacific fleet is built entirely around catch and release.
Cómo se organizan las normas
- • One national authority covers both coasts and inland waters, with additional rules inside protected areas managed with CONAP (the protected-areas council).
- • Lake Petén Itzá and the northern lakes sit in the Maya Biosphere buffer zone, where park and community rules sit on top of the national licence.
Conviene saber: errores frecuentes
- • The Pacific ports (Iztapa, Puerto Quetzal) are the sport fishing centre; the Caribbean coast is small and most fishing there is artisanal.
- • Freshwater sport fishing is lightly developed outside Petén — expect local guides to be the practical source of current local rules.
