Winter Fishing: Ice Season & Winter Steelhead

Winter is not the off-season — it is a different season. Across Canada and the northern US states the lakes lock up and a hard-water fishery opens on top of them, while on the Pacific coast the year's most anticipated river run — winter steelhead — pushes in from November to April. This page pulls both together: how to think about fishing on ice, the species that make it worthwhile, where to get a winter plan, and the steelhead timeline.

Ice fishing: start with safety

Every lake freezes differently, and freeze-up and break-up are the dangerous shoulders of the season. AnglerPlan's plans flag likely ice-covered water in winter, but a plan is never an ice report — conditions on the day are your call. The rules that keep ice anglers safe are old and simple:

  • • Check the ice yourself before you go — and keep checking as you move. Thickness and quality vary across a single lake, especially near inlets, outlets and current.
  • • Never go alone on early- or late-season ice, and tell someone where you will be and when you expect to be back.
  • • Spread out. A cluster of anglers, sleds and shelters loads one patch of ice far more than any single angler.
  • • Watch the known weak spots: river mouths, narrows with current, springs, docks and aerated water all freeze thinner than the lake around them.
  • • Carry the basics: ice picks worn around your neck, a spud bar to test ahead of you, warm layered clothing and a change of clothes sealed in the vehicle.

Once you are set up, winter plans here work the way summer plans do — solunar windows, weather and water conditions scored for the day — except the engine knows the water is hard: open-water advice (wind-chop banks, surface feeding) is replaced with ice-season context, and the winter species below are ranked in season, not off it. Pick your region below and build a plan for the day you have in mind.

The winter seven

Five of these are the classic targets of the ice belt — and until now they were scored as off-season in mid-winter. Two more, burbot and lake whitefish, are winter specialists whose whole year peaks under the ice. All seven are in season in ice-belt plans from December through February.

Winter steelhead: the other winter fishery

While the interior locks up, the coast runs. Winter steelhead enter BC and Pacific Northwest rivers from November through April, peaking from December to February — big, bright fish in cold, often swollen water, taken on float and drift presentations worked slow and close to the bottom.

The run in brief: first fish arrive in November; December to February is the heart of it, with fresh pushes after each rise of water; March and April wind the season down as spawning approaches. Cold water means slow fish — the steelhead plan entries below are built for exactly that.

Winter rules differ sharply by jurisdiction — ice seasons, shelter registration and removal deadlines, how many lines you may fish, and where night fishing is allowed. The regional guides linked above summarize each jurisdiction in plain language with the official sources; always confirm the current rules for your specific water before you go.
