Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences โ what you need
- โข Freshwater and saltwater fishing licences are separate; a saltwater reef fish endorsement-type structure applies to certain reef species trips (through the saltwater angler registry/endorsement system).
- โข A Wildlife Heritage Licence alternative exists for residents but does not replace non-resident fishing licences.
How the rules are organized
- โข Freshwater rules are largely statewide with named exceptions โ the Tennessee River chain (Guntersville, Wheeler, Pickwick, Wilson) and Coosa/Alabama River lakes draw the attention.
- โข Saltwater rules are set with the Marine Resources Division, organized by species with inshore/offshore distinctions.
Good to know โ common mistakes
- โข Reef fish trips from Gulf Shores/Orange Beach involve charter/headboat federal frameworks โ state licence alone is not the whole story offshore.
- โข Cobia, tripletail and sheepshead inshore rules are species-section reading, not statewide defaults.
- โข Paddlefish and snagging are tightly restricted; public fishing lakes (state/county lakes) have their own permits and boat rules.
- โข Alligator gar in the Mobile Delta and coastal rivers are managed conservatively โ treat as check-first.
