Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข One state sport fishing licence covers fresh and salt water; non-residents can buy short-term versions for a set number of days.
  • โ€ข Keeping a king (chinook) salmon requires an additional king salmon stamp โ€” and in some areas and seasons the stamp rules differ for guided and unguided anglers.
  • โ€ข A separate harvest record card is required for species like salmon and halibut in many areas; some fisheries require it to be carried and filled in immediately on landing a fish.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Rules are organized by region and then by individual drainage or saltwater area โ€” Alaska is managed as many small fisheries, not one statewide rulebook.
  • โ€ข Emergency orders issued in-season frequently open, close or restrict fisheries, especially for king salmon and sockeye; they override the printed regulation booklet.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Halibut are managed under federal rules with their own charter/unguided distinctions โ€” your licence being valid does not mean the halibut rules match the state booklet.
  • โ€ข Many roadside salmon fisheries are snagging-prohibited and fly-fishing-only in stretches โ€” gear rules change water by water.
  • โ€ข Dipnetting and personal-use fisheries (like the Kenai and Kasilof) are Alaska-resident-only โ€” visitors cannot join them on a sport licence.
  • โ€ข Guides must be registered and their clients still need their own licences and stamps.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
