Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences โ what you need
- โข Anglers need a Wildlife Identification Number (WiN) card first, then a sportfishing licence โ the WiN is a one-time prerequisite that visitors often don't know about.
- โข Special harvest licences (draw/undersubscribed tags) exist for specific walleye and other fisheries on top of the general licence.
How the rules are organized
- โข Rules are organized by Fisheries Management Zones and their watershed units โ many Alberta lakes carry zero-possession (catch-and-release) rules or lake-specific frameworks in the annual guide.
- โข Alberta manages many stocked trout ponds and prairie reservoirs individually; the lake listing in the guide is the real rulebook.
Good to know โ common mistakes
- โข The WiN card first, licence second โ you cannot skip step one.
- โข Many famous Alberta waters are catch-and-release for walleye or pike even where other waters allow harvest โ check the specific lake's listing.
- โข Ice fishing has shelter and line rules, and some waters close to ice fishing entirely.
- โข Bait rules (including baitfish bans in many trout waters and the mountain national parks' separate federal rules) vary sharply by zone.
