Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences โ what you need
- โข BC runs TWO licence systems that do not overlap: a provincial Freshwater Fishing Licence for lakes and rivers, and a federal BC Tidal Waters Sport Fishing Licence for the ocean and tidal reaches.
- โข Keeping salmon in tidal water requires a salmon conservation stamp on the tidal licence; freshwater salmon and classified-waters fisheries need their own additional licences/stamps.
- โข Non-residents pay higher fees and face some classified-waters restrictions โ and guided anglers need their own licences regardless of the guide's paperwork.
How the rules are organized
- โข Tidal salmon rules are set by DFO management area and subarea โ the area you launch from may not be the subarea you fish, and each has its own openings.
- โข Freshwater rules are published in the provincial synopsis by region, with water-specific regulations layered on top.
- โข In-season Fishery Notices override printed guides, apps and this page โ for salmon especially, the notice is the law.
Good to know โ common mistakes
- โข Barbless hooks are required when fishing for salmon in most BC tidal waters and in many freshwater salmon/sturgeon fisheries.
- โข The tidal/freshwater boundary on coastal rivers decides which licence you need โ on the Fraser and other systems the boundary is a defined line, not the salt taste of the water.
- โข Sturgeon fishing in the Fraser system is catch-and-release only, with its own licence and handling rules.
- โข Rockfish conservation areas close bottom fishing along parts of the coast โ a chartplotter view is not the legal map.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ including in-season by official notice โ and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.
AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ and please tell us so we can fix it.
