Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข One fishing licence covers fresh and tidal waters; most anglers also need a free FIN number (Fisherman Information Network registration) each year.
  • โ€ข Charter/headboat passengers fish under the boat's coverage; shore and private boat anglers need their own licence and FIN.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Rules are compact and largely statewide by species, with separate freshwater pond rules and tidal river/Bay sections in the guide.
  • โ€ข Delaware River and Bay rules are coordinated with New Jersey โ€” striped bass and other shared species follow a joint framework.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข The FIN number requirement is the classic Delaware miss โ€” licence alone is not complete paperwork for tidal fishing.
  • โ€ข Trout stocked ponds/streams run on a defined put-and-take season structure with designated waters only.
  • โ€ข Weakfish, tautog and striped bass rules in Delaware Bay track the joint ASMFC framework โ€” seasons change by regulation, so check yearly.
  • โ€ข Crabbing has an extensive separate rule set (pots, trotlines, recreational limits of gear) apart from finfish rules.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
