Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข Freshwater and saltwater licences are separate products; a shoreline (pier/beach) saltwater licence exists for residents (free for Florida residents) but boat fishing needs the regular saltwater licence.
  • โ€ข Specific species need free permits or tags on top: snook and lobster permits, tarpon tags, and reef fish survey/endorsement elements for reef species trips.
  • โ€ข Licence-free fishing days are held several times a year โ€” but permit species and all other rules still apply on those days.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Freshwater rules are organized by Fish Management Areas and named lakes with their own rules layered on a statewide base.
  • โ€ข Saltwater rules are strictly species-by-species, with regions for some species (snook, redfish and spotted seatrout have regional management zones with different rules).

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Regional management zones are the Florida trap: redfish, snook and seatrout rules genuinely change as you move along the coast โ€” know your zone, not just your species.
  • โ€ข Catch-and-release-only frameworks apply in places and times (e.g. snook after freezes, and the Apalachicola and other areas) โ€” announced by executive order.
  • โ€ข Shark fishing from shore needs the free shore-based shark fishing permit and course โ€” a rule visitors routinely miss.
  • โ€ข FWC rules interact with federal rules offshore; grouper and snapper seasons in state vs federal waters often differ.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
