Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข A fishing licence is required; a salmonid stamp is needed for Lake Michigan salmon/trout, an inland trout stamp for stocked trout waters, and a Lake Michigan perch/salmon framework applies on the big lake.
  • โ€ข Licences run April to March โ€” an easy renewal trap.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Statewide rules form the base, with a long site-specific list: many Illinois lakes and the Lake Michigan shoreline carry their own regulations published in the annual digest.
  • โ€ข Border waters (Mississippi, Ohio, Wabash, Lake Michigan) follow shared frameworks.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Site-specific regulations are the Illinois trap โ€” two lakes an hour apart can have different bass and crappie rules; the digest lists them by site name.
  • โ€ข Lake Michigan salmon fishing requires the salmonid stamp even from shore, and snagging is legal only in specifically designated areas/seasons.
  • โ€ข Two-pole and line limits are statewide structure, with site-specific waters sometimes allowing more.
  • โ€ข Ice fishing shelter rules and permitted waters vary by site; not every frozen lake is open to ice fishing.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
