Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข A fishing licence is required; a trout/salmon stamp is needed to fish for (and keep) trout and salmon, including Lake Michigan tributaries.
  • โ€ข Ohio River fishing follows a shared framework with Kentucky โ€” either state's licence is honoured on the main stem under the reciprocal agreement.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Statewide rules are the base; named lakes, the Lake Michigan shoreline/tributaries and Ohio River carry specific sections.
  • โ€ข Several northern lakes have special panfish/bass regulations listed individually.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข The trout/salmon stamp applies even if you release everything in Lake Michigan tributaries during the salmon run.
  • โ€ข Ice fishing is mostly a northern-lakes activity; shelters have identification rules and some waters restrict them.
  • โ€ข Muskie and hybrid striped bass waters carry water-specific rules in the northern lake country.
  • โ€ข Paddlefish snagging on the Ohio River is tightly regulated with its own season โ€” not part of general fishing.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
