Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข A fishing licence is required; trout fishing in stocked season waters requires a trout permit on top.
  • โ€ข Some city/county waters run their own additional local permit on top of the state licence.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Rules are statewide by species with a reference chart, plus a list of waters with special length/creel exceptions โ€” Kansas manages many reservoirs individually for wipers, walleye and crappie.
  • โ€ข Community fisheries (urban ponds) have their own posted expectations linked to stocking programs.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Paddlefish snagging is confined to designated areas and season windows with a separate tag.
  • โ€ข Trout permit waters change with the stocking season โ€” a pond that needs the permit in January may be a general water in summer.
  • โ€ข Jug lines, trotlines and setlines are legal in many waters with strict tagging/labelling rules โ€” and banned in some reservoirs.
  • โ€ข Wiper (hybrid striped bass) and saugeye waters often carry protected length ranges that differ from neighbouring reservoirs.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
