Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข A fishing licence is required; a trout permit is needed to keep trout, and Kentucky/Tennessee share Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley rules under agreement.
  • โ€ข The Ohio River reciprocal agreement with Indiana/Ohio/West Virginia lets either licence cover main-stem fishing.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Statewide regulations plus a list of special-regulation waters โ€” Kentucky manages many lakes individually for bass and crappie.
  • โ€ข Trout tailwaters (Cumberland River below Wolf Creek Dam) and stocked streams have their own sections.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข The Cumberland tailwater is one of the East's great trout fisheries with slot-style special rules and water-release-driven fishing โ€” check both the regs and the generation schedule.
  • โ€ข Fishing in Neighborhood Lakes (FINs program urban ponds) follows posted site rules tied to stocking.
  • โ€ข Trotlines, setlines and jug fishing are legal in many waters with labelling requirements โ€” and restricted in others.
  • โ€ข Paddlefish and Ohio River fisheries have their own seasons/frameworks.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
