Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข Louisiana restructured its licences: a basic fishing licence plus a separate saltwater licence are both needed for coastal fishing; freshwater-only anglers need just the basic.
  • โ€ข Anyone fishing from a charter in saltwater needs coverage under the charter framework โ€” and offshore reef fish involve a free Recreational Offshore Landing Permit (ROLP).
  • โ€ข Licences are sold on a rolling 365-day basis in the current system.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Freshwater rules are mostly statewide with named water exceptions; saltwater rules are organized by species with inshore/offshore and area-specific elements (and federal rules offshore for reef fish and tuna).
  • โ€ข Management areas (WMAs) and refuges have their own fishing rules and access permits layered on top.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข The basic-plus-saltwater two-part licence is Louisiana's big trap โ€” a 'fishing licence' alone leaves you illegal in the marsh.
  • โ€ข Red snapper season in state waters is set separately from the federal season and is announced year to year; the two do not match by default.
  • โ€ข Crabbing, shrimping and oyster rules are extensive and separate from finfish rules; cast-netting has its own framework.
  • โ€ข Speckled trout rules were overhauled in recent years (slot concepts) โ€” old local knowledge is unreliable; read the current pamphlet.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
