Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences โ what you need
- โข An angling licence is required; trout fishing in designated trout waters requires a trout stamp validation, and spearing/angling structures differ.
- โข Darkhouse spearing of northern pike needs its own licence elements and shelter registration expectations.
How the rules are organized
- โข Statewide species rules form the base, but Minnesota is famous for lake-specific special and experimental regulations โ hundreds of individual lakes carry their own walleye/panfish rules posted at the access and listed online.
- โข Boundary waters (Lake of the Woods, Rainy, Red River, Mississippi/St. Croix with Wisconsin) follow shared rules.
Good to know โ common mistakes
- โข Always check the lake-specific regulations list: the lake you are on may have a special walleye or crappie regulation that replaces the statewide default.
- โข Ice fishing is a full season: fish houses need identification, must be licensed in many cases, and have strict removal deadlines that are enforced.
- โข Live bait rules and bait harvest are regulated tightly; moving water or bait between lakes is restricted under aquatic invasive species law.
- โข Muskie fishing has its own season framework and a catch-and-release culture with special rules on designated muskie lakes.
