Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences โ what you need
- โข A fishing permit is required; a trout permit is needed to keep trout and to fish in trout parks, and a separate white river / border structure applies on shared waters.
- โข Lake of the Ozarks, Truman and Table Rock are covered by the general permit โ no separate lake licence โ but trout parks (Bennett Spring, Roaring River, Montauk, Maramec) have daily tags.
How the rules are organized
- โข The Wildlife Code sets statewide rules; trout management areas, wild trout streams and special lake regulations are listed water by water.
- โข Border rivers (Mississippi and Missouri) run under commercial/recreational frameworks shared with neighbouring states.
Good to know โ common mistakes
- โข Trout parks operate on a daily tag system with their own whistle-start fishing hours โ unlike any other Missouri water.
- โข Paddlefish snagging has a defined season and the big reservoirs (Lake of the Ozarks, Truman, Table Rock) are the centre of it; snagging is prohibited outside the framework.
- โข Noodling/hand fishing remains prohibited in Missouri despite neighbouring states allowing it.
- โข Gigging of rough fish is a legal Ozarks tradition in season on streams โ with species and season rules of its own.
