Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข A fishing permit is required; an Aquatic Habitat Stamp is included in / required alongside most permits and funds habitat work.
  • โ€ข Paddlefish snagging on the Missouri River needs a separate special permit drawn by lottery-style application.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Rules are largely statewide by species, with a special-regulations list for named waters (walleye and trout waters especially).
  • โ€ข The Missouri River border with South Dakota and Iowa follows shared border-water rules.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Many Sandhills and interstate lakes have slot-style special regulations for walleye/panfish that differ from state defaults โ€” check the water list.
  • โ€ข Ice fishing shelters must be removed daily on some waters and by deadlines on others.
  • โ€ข Noodling/hand fishing is not a general Nebraska method โ€” setline and snagging rules are narrow and species-specific.
  • โ€ข Trout in the northwest are managed with put-and-take and special stretches on the Pine Ridge streams.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
