Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences โ what you need
- โข A fishing licence is required statewide; a Colorado River special use stamp structure applies on the river and Lake Mead/Mohave under an interstate agreement with Arizona.
- โข Trout stamps and second-rod stamps are add-ons โ a second rod without the stamp is a violation even in open water.
How the rules are organized
- โข Rules are organized by county/region with individual waters listed for exceptions โ most Nevada fishing is desert reservoirs, urban ponds and a handful of trout waters.
- โข Waters on tribal land (notably Pyramid Lake) are governed by the tribe's own permits and rules, not the state booklet.
Good to know โ common mistakes
- โข Pyramid Lake needs a tribal fishing permit, not a state licence โ and its Lahontan cutthroat rules are entirely its own.
- โข Lake Mead and the Colorado River follow the interstate agreement rules, which differ from Nevada's inland defaults.
- โข Baitfish rules are strict and region-specific; live bait legal in the south is prohibited in many northern waters.
- โข Ice fishing is a minor, water-specific activity โ check the individual water before drilling.
