New Brunswick

New Brunswick Dept. of Natural Resources & DFO (tidal/salmon)

Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข An inland fishing licence covers provincial waters, with licence classes by duration and residency; Atlantic salmon require salmon-specific licence/tags under a combined provincial-federal framework.
  • โ€ข Fishing in tidal water for most finfish does not require the provincial licence, but salmon angling anywhere runs through the salmon licence system.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Inland rules are published in the provincial Fish book organized by region and water, with salmon rivers listed individually and Crown Reserve stretches allocated by draw/reservation.
  • โ€ข DFO governs salmon conservation measures and tidal fisheries; in-season variation orders can restrict salmon rivers as runs develop.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข The Miramichi and Restigouche salmon systems have river-specific rules, Crown Reserve draw waters and fly-fishing-only frameworks โ€” plan access, not just licences.
  • โ€ข Catch-and-release is the backbone of the Atlantic salmon framework in New Brunswick โ€” retention is the exception, set by tag rules and DFO measures.
  • โ€ข Ice fishing has its own designated waters list and season structure on inland lakes.
  • โ€ข Bass in the Saint John River system and striped bass in the Gulf are hot-button managed fisheries with their own sections โ€” check both provincial and DFO sources.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
