Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences โ what you need
- โข A fishing licence covers fresh and (state) salt water for residents in combined form; separate freshwater and recreational saltwater products exist, and saltwater anglers register through the licence system for the federal registry.
- โข Licences are calendar-year; short-term freshwater options exist for visitors.
How the rules are organized
- โข Freshwater rules are organized by water category โ lakes and ponds vs rivers and streams โ with a long list of special-rule waters (fly-fishing-only ponds, salmon lakes, trout ponds with opening structure).
- โข Lake trout/salmon lakes are managed as a distinct set with their own season framework and ice fishing rules.
Good to know โ common mistakes
- โข New Hampshire's fly-fishing-only and catch-and-release trout ponds are numerous and posted โ the pond sign and the special list govern.
- โข Ice fishing is a major season with bob-house (shelter) rules and removal deadlines, and lake trout lakes have a defined ice season.
- โข Smelt fishing (dip-netting and ice fishing on the coast/lakes) has its own rules and culture.
- โข Atlantic salmon restoration waters (Merrimack, Connecticut rivers) are strictly catch-and-release / closed frameworks โ never keep an Atlantic salmon.
