New Jersey DEP โ€” Fish & Wildlife

Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข Freshwater fishing needs a licence, plus a trout stamp for trout waters. Saltwater fishing has NO licence โ€” but the free NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry registration is mandatory.
  • โ€ข Fishing licences run on a calendar-year basis; the registry registration also renews annually.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Freshwater rules are statewide by species with trout waters classified and listed; saltwater rules are species-based following the coastal (ASMFC/federal) framework.
  • โ€ข Delaware River fishing runs under a joint commission framework with Pennsylvania/New York/Delaware for shared species.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข The free saltwater registry is the classic NJ miss: no licence exists, but fishing saltwater unregistered is still a violation.
  • โ€ข Striped bass in the Delaware River and its tributaries has circle-hook and seasonal closure structure that differs from the ocean rules.
  • โ€ข Trout stocked waters close during pre-season stocking windows in spring โ€” check the closure list before an early trip.
  • โ€ข Ice fishing is limited to listed waters with tip-up rules; not every frozen lake is legal.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
