Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences โ what you need
- โข Inland fishing needs a provincial licence; Atlantic salmon angling runs on a combined system โ a provincial salmon licence with federal tag/retention rules set by DFO's management plan.
- โข Trout licences are separate products from salmon licences in the provincial structure โ know which you are buying.
- โข The recreational groundfish (cod) fishery is licence-free but only open on DFO-announced days โ the calendar, not a licence, is the gate.
How the rules are organized
- โข Salmon rivers are classified (Class system) with river-specific retention rules, and the annual angling guide plus DFO announcements together govern the season; rivers can close in-season for low water/warm temperatures.
- โข Inland trout waters follow the provincial angling guide framework with scheduled waters listed individually.
Good to know โ common mistakes
- โข The groundfish season days are announced each year and change โ showing up on the wrong Saturday is the classic visitor error.
- โข Salmon river classification and environmental closures (heat/low water protocols) can shut famous rivers mid-season โ check DFO notices before travelling.
- โข Non-resident anglers face guide requirements on many scheduled salmon waters and in Labrador โ a guide is not optional in much of the province.
- โข Labrador's brook trout and landlocked salmon fisheries operate under the same licence products but distinct local rules in the angling guide.
