Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข A fishing licence is required; non-residents can choose short-term options. Paddlefish require a separate tag in their limited season.
  • โ€ข Darkhouse spearfishing (through the ice) is a legal, licence-covered activity for pike in North Dakota โ€” with its own registration and rules.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Rules are set statewide for most species with lake-specific exceptions listed in the fishing guide; the Missouri River system and Devils Lake carry their own notes.
  • โ€ข Border waters (Missouri River with South Dakota/Montana, Red River with Minnesota) follow special shared rules.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Ice fishing dominates winter: shelters must be identified and removed by deadlines on most waters.
  • โ€ข Live baitfish rules are strict โ€” bait must come from approved sources and leftover bait cannot be released.
  • โ€ข Devils Lake and Lake Sakakawea have specific exceptions that differ from the statewide defaults.
  • โ€ข Aquatic nuisance species rules require draining and cleaning boats โ€” enforcement is active at ramps.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
