Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข A provincial sportfishing licence covers inland waters; salmon require salmon licence/tags within the provincial-DFO framework.
  • โ€ข Tidal water fishing for most species does not require a provincial licence, but federal rules govern many marine species (and mackerel, groundfish seasons are set by DFO).

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Inland rules are organized by county/water in the provincial anglers' handbook, with special trout management areas and salmon rivers listed individually.
  • โ€ข DFO's Maritime region sets tidal recreational rules, including the recreational groundfish season windows announced yearly.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Nova Scotia's special trout management areas (like the Stewiacke and Cornwallis systems) have gear and harvest rules beyond the general handbook.
  • โ€ข Recreational groundfish (cod/haddock) fishing in the Maritimes runs in DFO-announced windows โ€” not an open-all-summer fishery.
  • โ€ข Striped bass in the Minas Basin/Shubenacadie system vs the Northumberland Strait side follow different (DFO) frameworks.
  • โ€ข Ice fishing is limited to designated waters with a short winter season framework.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
