Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences โ what you need
- โข One angling licence covers the whole state; salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and halibut must be recorded on a combined angling tag or hatchery harvest tag.
- โข Fishing the Columbia River system requires a Columbia River Basin endorsement on top of the licence and tag.
- โข Ocean salmon and Pacific halibut have their own tag/validation structure โ a freshwater-only setup is not enough for a charter trip.
How the rules are organized
- โข Freshwater rules are organized by zone (Northwest, Willamette, Central, Columbia and so on), with water-specific exceptions listed under each zone.
- โข Ocean salmon seasons are set jointly with federal managers after the salmon are forecast each spring, separate from the printed synopsis.
Good to know โ common mistakes
- โข Wild (unclipped) salmon and steelhead must be released in most fisheries โ only adipose-fin-clipped hatchery fish can be kept, and the fin clip is the whole game.
- โข Barbless hooks are required in ocean salmon fisheries and many river fisheries.
- โข Two-rod fishing needs a separate validation and is not allowed everywhere.
- โข Angling deadlines (closing hours) apply on many salmon/steelhead waters โ fishing after the deadline hour is a common ticket.
