Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข An angling licence is sold through the provincial HAL (Hunting, Angling and Trapping Licence) system; licence types differ for residents, Canadian residents and non-residents.
  • โ€ข Since the 2026-27 season, an Angling Habitat Certificate is also required alongside annual licences (a smaller certificate applies to short-term licences) โ€” a new step visiting anglers have not met before.
  • โ€ข Free fishing weekends are held a couple of times a year โ€” licence waived, all other rules intact.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Rules are organized by three management zones (Southern, Central, Northern), with a list of specific waters carrying their own seasons and rules (including stocked trout waters and major lakes like Diefenbaker, Tobin and Last Mountain).
  • โ€ข Northern waters have different general seasons than southern waters reflecting later ice-out.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Several trophy waters carry custom rules โ€” Tobin Lake's walleye framework and slot-style protections are the famous example.
  • โ€ข Barbless hooks are required on a number of designated waters (and in neighbouring prairie provinces) โ€” check the water listing.
  • โ€ข Ice fishing is a huge part of the season; shelters left on ice need identification and removal by zone deadlines.
  • โ€ข Live baitfish use is restricted โ€” the bait rules tighten steadily over aquatic invasive species concerns.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
