Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข A fishing licence is required; a Habitat Stamp is also required for most anglers and is easy to forget at purchase.
  • โ€ข Paddlefish and special fisheries (like the Lake Francis Case snagging season) need separate tags.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Rules are organized by species groups statewide, with named waters (Missouri River reservoirs, Black Hills streams, eastern glacial lakes) carrying their own exceptions.
  • โ€ข Border waters with Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota have shared rules that can differ from inland defaults.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Ice fishing is a core season; shelter identification and removal deadlines apply, and some lakes allow spearing of rough fish and pike.
  • โ€ข Black Hills trout streams include artificial-only and catch-and-release stretches.
  • โ€ข Set lines and trotlines are restricted and water-specific โ€” legal in the Missouri River system, not everywhere.
  • โ€ข Baitfish rules restrict where minnows can be taken and used; do not move bait between lakes.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
