Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ we never copy a limit table and call it current.
Licences โ what you need
- โข A fishing licence is required; inland trout need a trout stamp, Great Lakes salmon/trout need their own stamp, and sturgeon fishing (spearing and hook-and-line) needs separate tags.
- โข Lake Winnebago sturgeon spearing is a tag-and-registration fishery unlike anything else in the state.
How the rules are organized
- โข Rules combine a statewide base with county and individual-lake regulations โ and separate rulebooks for the Great Lakes, the Winnebago system and boundary waters (Mississippi River, Lake Superior).
- โข The early catch-and-release trout season, general inland season and Great Lakes seasons are three different calendars.
Good to know โ common mistakes
- โข Check the specific lake: hundreds of Wisconsin lakes carry individual walleye, bass or panfish rules beyond the county defaults.
- โข Ice fishing is central: ice shanties have identification and removal deadlines, and tip-up fishing is a regulated method with its own rules.
- โข Motor trolling is allowed only on listed waters โ a rule that surprises visitors from other states.
- โข Rough fish spearing, bowfishing and sturgeon spearing each have dedicated rule sections with mandatory harvest registration.
