Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข A fishing licence plus a conservation stamp are required; separate stamps/permits apply to special waters and ice fishing follows the same licence.
  • โ€ข Flaming Gorge Reservoir straddles the Utah line and needs a reciprocal stamp to fish the other state's side.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Rules are organized by drainage basin with area-wide standards and many water-specific exceptions listed by name.
  • โ€ข Some waters are managed under special regulations (trophy, wild trout, or artificial-only) that override the basin defaults.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Live baitfish use is tightly controlled and prohibited in most western drainages โ€” bait rules are drainage-specific.
  • โ€ข Cutthroat conservation waters and brook trout liberalized waters sit side by side โ€” identical-looking creeks can have opposite rules.
  • โ€ข Wind River Indian Reservation waters require tribal permits, not just a state licence.
  • โ€ข Ice fishing is a major season and shelter/line rules vary by water โ€” check the individual reservoir.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
