Rules change by area and can change mid-season. We explain what the rules mean and always link you to the official source โ€” we never copy a limit table and call it current.

Licences โ€” what you need

  • โ€ข A Yukon fishing licence is required; licences for residents, Canadians and non-residents differ, and Kluane National Park waters need a separate Parks Canada permit.
  • โ€ข Fishing in First Nations settlement lands can have additional protocols โ€” some waters require permission or follow traditional-use frameworks.
  • โ€ข Fishing for salmon requires a Salmon Conservation Catch Card on top of the licence, and a handful of lakes (Tatlmain and Wellesley) need an additional sport fishing licence.

How the rules are organized

  • โ€ข Rules are published in the Yukon fishing regulations summary organized by species with a list of special-regulation waters (several lakes have single-location rules for lake trout, grayling and stocked rainbows).
  • โ€ข Salmon conservation drives in-season management on the Yukon River system under the international Yukon salmon framework with Alaska.

Good to know โ€” common mistakes

  • โ€ข Many Yukon lakes are catch-and-release or slot-managed for lake trout โ€” the special waters list matters more than the general species pages.
  • โ€ข Barbless hooks are required on a number of designated waters.
  • โ€ข Grayling and lake trout dominate; stocked rainbow ponds near Whitehorse follow the general rules but are listed separately.
  • โ€ข Yukon River salmon fisheries can be heavily restricted for conservation โ€” recreational salmon opportunities are limited and announced.

This page is a plain-language summary, not the law. Regulations change โ€” including in-season by official notice โ€” and if anything here disagrees with the official source, the official source governs.

AnglerPlan is an information service, not a regulator. If anything here disagrees with an official source, the official source wins โ€” and please tell us so we can fix it.
