How to catch them

Dry-fly fishing small streams

Rig: 3-4 wt fly rod, short light leader, small dry fly fished pool by pool

Bait/lure: Elk-hair caddis, Parachute Adams and small mayfly dries

Key tip: Approach pools low and slow โ€” Apache trout spook easily in clear water, but a clean first cast usually rises a fish.

Ultralight spinning in mountain lakes

Rig: Ultralight rod, 2-4 lb line, miniature spinner or spoon

Bait/lure: Tiny gold and copper spinners, 1/16 oz spoons

Key tip: Work inlet mouths and shade lines early and late. Keep retrieves slow in cold water.
