Identifying features

  • Slate-blue to silvery body with a distinctly humped back behind the head
  • Long, straight-edged anal fin with 30 or more rays โ€” much longer than a channel cat's
  • Deeply forked tail; skin smooth and scaleless like all catfish
  • The giant of North American catfish โ€” 50 lb fish are realistic, 100 lb possible
  • Look-alike: channel catfish have a shorter, rounded anal fin, deeper fork and (young) black spots

Habits

  • Roams open water and deep river channels more than other catfish, chasing shad schools
  • Feeds day and night, moving shallow to hunt on windy banks and flats
  • Big winter aggregations in deep holes produce the trophy season
  • Uses its barbels and scent to find cut bait in current and muddy water

  • Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio River channels and wing dikes
  • Deep summer holes below dams across the Southeast

How to catch them

Drift fishing with cut shad

Rig: Santee-Cooper drift rig, 7/0-8/0 circle hook, peg float

Bait/lure: Fresh cut gizzard shad chunks

Key tip: Drift flats and channel edges at 0.3-0.6 mph; fresh bait outfishes frozen by a wide margin.

Anchored fishing in current

Rig: Three-way or Carolina rig with 2-5 oz sinker

Bait/lure: Cut shad or whole skipjack heads

Key tip: Anchor above deep holes and wing dikes; give trophy fish time โ€” big bites are slow commits.
