  • Top side mottled brown-green; underside white
  • Lateral line is nearly straight, with only a slight arch over the pectoral fin
  • Large mouth with obvious sharp teeth for a flatfish
  • Look-alike: Pacific halibut is right-eyed with a strongly arched lateral line and grows far larger

Habits

  • Lie buried in sand and ambush baitfish passing with the tide
  • Feed hardest on moving water, especially the start of the flood

How to catch them

Drifting live bait

Rig: Three-way or dropper rig with a 4-6 oz sinker, live bait hook

Bait/lure: Live anchovy, sardine or smelt

Key tip: Drift with the tide and keep the bait ticking bottom. Wait on the pickup before setting.

Bouncing swimbaits

Rig: 3/4-1 oz leadhead with a 4-5" swimbait

Bait/lure: Smelt and anchovy-pattern swimbaits

Key tip: Slow roll with rod-tip bounces so the tail thumps just off bottom.
