Where they live
How to catch them
Weedless swimbaits in the kelp
Rig: 5-7 in swimbait on a weedless leadhead, heavy braid, cast into lanes and pockets
Bait/lure: Swimbaits in sardine, calico and brown-bait colours
Key tip: Let it sink into the pocket, then wind slowly. Kelp bass track it out of the weeds โ keep winding through the bite.
Fly-lining live bait
Rig: Small live-bait hook, no weight, bait cast to the kelp edge
Bait/lure: Live anchovies or small sardines
Key tip: Keep the bait swimming at the edge, not in open water. Thumb the spool โ the bite comes fast.
