Saltwater ยท Year-round; a mainstay of Southern California party-boat seasons

Identifying features

  • A tilefish, not a true whitefish: torpedo body, bluish back, silver-white belly and a long continuous dorsal fin
  • Yellow-tipped tail lobes and yellow markings on the dorsal fin; pectoral fins are yellowish
  • Mouth is moderate with fleshy lips; no barbel, no spines to fear
  • Colour pales to almost white after capture โ€” the source of the name
  • Look-alike: freshwater lake whitefish are a salmon-family fish of northern lakes; ocean whitefish are warm-water marine tilefish

Habits

  • A bottom-oriented tilefish: hovers and picks over rocky banks and island slopes in 60-300 ft
  • Feeds on squid, shrimp, crabs and small fish right on the bottom
  • The backbone of Southern California half-day boat catches alongside rockfish
  • Schools loosely over hard bottom; where you catch one, you'll catch more

Where to find them

How to catch them

Dropper-loop bottom fishing

Rig: Two dropper loops with #2-1/0 hooks above a 6-10 oz sinker

Bait/lure: Squid strip โ€” a thumbnail-sized pennant

Key tip: Keep baits fresh and small; whitefish peck big squid chunks apart without hooking up.

Jigging the bank

Rig: Shrimp-fly rig or small jig worked with short hops on bottom

Bait/lure: Small metal jig or shrimp fly tipped with squid

Key tip: Fish the up-current edge of the rock โ€” the school feeds facing the flow.

On the table

Excellent โ€” the ocean whitefish is a tilefish, and its sweet, firm flesh rivals the best rockfish; watch for bones in the fillet.
