  • One or more black spots at the base of the tail โ€” the classic giveaway

How to catch them

Popping cork and shrimp

Rig: Popping cork over an 18-24 in leader and a 3/0 circle hook

Bait/lure: Live shrimp; soft-plastic shrimp as an alternative

Key tip: Pop the cork hard, then pause. Reds home in on the sound.

Cut bait on the bottom for bulls

Rig: Fish-finder rig with a 6/0-8/0 circle hook and enough weight to hold

Bait/lure: Cut mullet, menhaden or half a blue crab

Key tip: Fish passes and surf troughs in fall. Let the circle hook load up.
