How to catch them

Bottom fishing hard bottom

Rig: Knocker rig or Carolina rig, 4-8 oz lead, 6/0-7/0 circle hook

Bait/lure: Sardines, threadfins or squid strips

Key tip: Drift slowly over pothole bottom and keep the bait right on the deck. Reds often pick it up and sit — lift firmly.

Live-baiting the ledges

Rig: Heavy bottom outfit, 60 lb leader, large circle hook

Bait/lure: Live pinfish or small grunts

Key tip: Anchor up-current of a ledge and fish baits back along it. Give the fish a moment, then wind it clear.
