Identifying features

  • Bold black bars on a silvery-grey body โ€” the 'convict fish'
  • Blunt head with unmistakable human-like incisor teeth at the front of the jaw
  • Strong, sharp dorsal spines and a deep, compressed body
  • Crushing molar teeth at the back of the jaw for barnacles and crabs
  • Look-alike: young black drum also carry bars, but have a row of barbels under the chin and no big front teeth

Habits

  • Lives glued to pilings, jetties, rocks and reefs, picking barnacles and crustaceans
  • A master bait thief โ€” bites are a barely-felt tap or slow pressure
  • Gathers in big spawning groups at passes and nearshore reefs in late winter
  • Feeds most actively on moving tide around heavy structure

Jetty and reef fishing
