Identifying features

  • Silvery body with 6-7 dark horizontal stripes, the lower ones faint and often broken
  • Deep-bodied and slab-sided compared with other temperate basses
  • One tooth patch on the tongue (striped bass and hybrids have two)
  • Usually 1/2-2 lb โ€” packs a big fight for its size
  • Look-alike: landlocked striped bass are far larger with bold, unbroken stripes

Habits

  • Runs up tributary rivers by the thousands each spring to spawn over gravel
  • Schools chase shad at the surface in open lake water through summer โ€” 'jumps' under diving gulls
  • Feeds most aggressively at dawn, dusk and on windy, cloudy days
  • Holds near current seams, riffles and points the rest of the year

Where to find them

  • Spawning riffles in Great Lakes and Mississippi tributaries each spring
  • Main-lake points and humps where shad schools pass
  • Tailwaters below dams year-round
  • Texas river runs (the famous spring 'sand bass' runs) and lake flats

How to catch them

Casting to surface schools

Rig: Light spinning outfit, small spoon or topwater

Bait/lure: Silver spoons, tiny crankbaits, white jigs

Key tip: Cast past the school and work the edge โ€” the biggest fish hang below the surface frenzy.

River-run jig fishing

Rig: 1/8-1/4 oz jig with a grub, fished in current seams

Bait/lure: White and chartreuse grubs, small spinners

Key tip: Work riffle tails and eddy lines during the spring run; expect a bite every cast at peak.
