Identifying features

  • Bold dark horizontal stripes run the full length of the back โ€” clean, straight and unbroken
  • No spots below the pectoral fin and no markings on the white belly
  • Teeth line the whole jaw, upper and lower โ€” feel carefully, bonito bite
  • Slender, mackerel-like tuna with a mouth that reaches back under the eye
  • Look-alike: little tunny have a marbled, wormy back pattern and fingerprint spots; bonito have ruler-straight back stripes

Habits

  • A cool-water tuna cousin โ€” shows in the northeast from late spring as the water warms
  • Feeds in packs on sand eels, spearing and butterfish over offshore lumps and inshore rips
  • Often runs with bluefish and little tunny but stays a touch deeper and warier
  • Fights clean and fast, then bulldogs near the boat

How to catch them

Fly and light-tackle casting

Rig: 8-9 wt fly rod or medium spinning outfit, small baitfish imitations

Bait/lure: Sand-eel flies and small epoxy minnows

Key tip: Let the school come to you โ€” chasing bonito with the motor shuts them down.

Trolling and jigging humps

Rig: Light tackle trolled or jigged over structure in 30-60 ft

Bait/lure: Small spoons and squid-tipped jigs

Key tip: If birds sit and stare, drop a jig โ€” the bait, and the bonito, are underneath them.
