Identifying features

  • Golden-brown to silvery body with faint diagonal bars on the upper sides
  • Three to five tiny barbels on each side of the chin
  • Slightly forked tail with a pointed lower lobe, and a concave upper edge to the fin
  • Named for the loud croaking it makes by drumming its swim bladder
  • Look-alike: red drum are bigger and bronze with a tail-base spot; croaker are small and spotless

Habits

  • Feeds in schools over mud and sand bottom on shrimp, worms and small crabs
  • Moves into bays and estuaries in spring, out to deeper water in winter
  • Croaks loudly when caught โ€” spawning choruses can be heard through a boat hull

How to catch them

High-low bottom rigging

Rig: Two-hook top-and-bottom rig, 1-3 oz sinker, small hooks

Bait/lure: Bloodworm, shrimp or squid pieces

Key tip: Keep baits small โ€” croaker mouths are little; a nibbled bare hook means baits too big.

Pier and surf fishing

Rig: Light spinning outfit, high-low rig fished in the trough

Bait/lure: Shrimp and bloodworm pieces

Key tip: Evenings and the first of the flood tide produce the steadiest action.
