Identifying features

  • Bold dark bars and brassy-yellow blotches pattern the sides of adults โ€” barred, unmistakably
  • Deep, compressed perch body with a forked tail and a steep, blunt head
  • Bars fade on very young fish; big males in breeding season turn dark and dusky
  • Mouth small and low, built for plucking crabs and clams from the wash
  • Look-alike: redtail surfperch (Pacific Northwest) have reddish fins and faint bars; barred surfperch are brassy with bold bars and pale fins

Habits

  • Holds in the surf's troughs and holes, feeding where the waves churn sand crabs loose
  • Gives live birth in the surf in winter and spring โ€” big pregnant females dominate the cold-season catch
  • Bites in the foam: most fish are caught in water barely knee-deep
  • Moves with the tide, sliding into holes at low water and roaming the beach face at high

How to catch them

Surf fishing the trough

Rig: High-low rig or Carolina rig, 2-3 oz pyramid sinker to hold in the wash

Bait/lure: Sand crab โ€” dig them at your feet between sets

Key tip: Cast just past the first breaker and work back into the trough โ€” that's the feeding lane.

Grubbing on light tackle

Rig: Carolina rig with a soft-plastic grub on a #6 hook, 8-10 lb gear

Bait/lure: 2" motor-oil or camo sandworm grubs

Key tip: Slow, steady retrieve through the foam; perch chase grubs when crabs are scarce.
