Saltwater ยท Late spring through early fall; high tides over sand-crab beds

California Corbina

Menticirrhus undulatus

The grey ghost of the Southern California surf โ€” corbina glide through ankle-deep wash picking sand crabs, so wary that sight-casting to them is the beach's highest art.

Identifying features

  • A single short barbel under the chin โ€” the only California croaker with just one
  • Long, low, grey-brown body with faint wavy bars; belly pale, fins dusky
  • Mouth is small and downturned, set low for vacuuming sand crabs from the wash
  • No scales on the soft dorsal fin; tail is slightly double-concave, not forked
  • Look-alike: yellowfin croaker (a close cousin) have yellow-tinged fins and NO chin barbel; corbina are drab grey-brown with the single barbel

Habits

  • A surf-zone specialist: swims the wash in inches of water hunting sand crabs in the backwash
  • Picks through sand-crab colonies at high tide, often with its tail out of the water
  • Extremely wary โ€” a shadow or a stomped foot sends the school bolting
  • Most active at dawn, dusk and on the flooding tide over crab beds

How to catch them

Sight-casting the wash

Rig: Carolina rig with a 1/2 oz egg sinker, #4-#2 hook, 6-8 lb leader

Bait/lure: Soft-shell sand crab, hooked once through the back

Key tip: Walk slowly, watch the backwash, and cast ahead of cruising fish โ€” never at them.

Soaking crab beds at high tide

Rig: Light surf outfit fished right in the wash zone

Bait/lure: Bloodworms, ghost shrimp

Key tip: If you can see sand-crab colonies in the backwash, corbina are near โ€” fish the flooding tide.
