Black Crappie

Pomoxis nigromaculatus

A speckled, paper-mouthed panfish that suspends over brush and timber in clear lakes and sloughs. Crappie bite small jigs and minnows delicately — the strike is often just a slight heaviness.

How to catch them

Jig fishing over brush

Rig: 1/16-1/32 oz jig head with a 2 in tube or shad body, fished vertically

Bait/lure: Chartreuse, white and shad-pattern soft plastics

Key tip: Count the jig down to the top of the brush and hold it still. Use a light drag.

Slip-float minnows

Rig: Slip float set to suspend a small minnow just above cover

Bait/lure: Small live minnows where legal

Key tip: Set the depth 1 ft above the brush top to avoid snagging.
