Identifying features

  • Slender, torpedo body in mirror silver with faint dark olive stripes along the back
  • Underslung, downward mouth built for rooting shrimp and crabs from the sand
  • Deeply forked tail; a single short dorsal fin
  • Seldom over 10 lb โ€” what it lacks in size it repays in blistering speed
  • Look-alike: tarpon are giants that roll at the surface; bonefish stay low and tail in inches of water

Habits

  • Pushes onto shallow flats with the rising tide to feed nose-down, tails waving above the surface
  • Eats small crabs, shrimp and worms it digs from sand and turtle grass
  • Extremely wary โ€” shadows, noise and clumsy casts empty a flat instantly
  • Runs 100+ yards of backing in seconds on its first surge

Where to find them

  • Sand and turtle-grass flats of the Florida Keys, Biscayne Bay and the Bahamas side
  • Oahu's flats around Honolulu โ€” Hawaiian 'o'io are among the world's largest bonefish
  • Mud banks and mangrove edges on the incoming tide
  • Wade or pole the flat on a rising tide, watching for tails and nervous water

How to catch them

Sight-casting jigs and bait

Rig: 7' light spinning rod, 10 lb braid, 15 lb fluorocarbon leader

Bait/lure: Live shrimp or 1/4 oz skimmer jigs

Key tip: Cast well ahead of a moving fish and let it find the bait on the bottom โ€” never cast onto its head.

Fly fishing the flats

Rig: 8 wt fly rod, floating line, 10-12 ft leader

Bait/lure: Gotcha, Crazy Charlie and shrimp patterns

Key tip: Move slowly, watch for tails and muds, and strip in short bumps once the fish turns.
