Identifying features

  • Huge, mirror-bright silver scales โ€” a chrome-plated look no other flats fish has
  • Deeply forked tail and an upturned, bony lower jaw built for surface prey
  • The last ray of the dorsal fin is drawn out into a long filament
  • Giants of the flats: adults commonly 60-150 lb
  • Look-alike: bonefish are a fraction of the size, with a downward, underslung mouth

Habits

  • Migrates along Florida's coasts in late spring in long daisy chains and strings
  • Rolls at the surface to gulp air โ€” follow the rolls to find the school
  • Feeds on mullet, crabs and shrimp, often at dawn, dusk and into the night
  • Famous for violent, greyhounding leaps that throw hooks by shaking the bony jaw
