Identifying features

  • Golden-brown sides with large black and red spots ringed by pale halos
  • Few or no spots on the tail fin — a fast separator from rainbow trout
  • Square, barely forked tail
  • Lake-run fish turn silvery but keep the haloed spots
  • Look-alike: Atlantic salmon have X-shaped spots, no red haloed spots, and a clearly forked tail

Habits

  • Solitary and territorial, holding a single bank or lie for months
  • Small fish rise to hatches by day; large fish hunt fish and crayfish at night
  • Extremely wary — they spook at shadows, vibration and careless casts
  • Move into tributaries to spawn in fall

How to catch them

Evening streamer fishing

Rig: Floating or sink-tip line, short stout leader, 3-4" streamer

Bait/lure: Woolly buggers, sculpin and baitfish patterns

Key tip: Fish the last hour of light tight to the banks. Big browns own the dark.

Matching the hatch with dries

Rig: 9' 5-weight, 12 ft tapered leader, dry fly

Bait/lure: Caddis, mayfly and terrestrial patterns

Key tip: Approach from downstream and keep drifts drag-free.
