Identifying features

  • Bold yellow stripe along the flank running into a deeply forked yellow tail
  • Olive-green to blue back over bright silver sides
  • Torpedo body with a steep, blunt forehead โ€” a jack, not a tuna
  • Adults commonly 10-30 lb at the islands and offshore banks
  • Look-alike: white seabass are uniform grey with no yellow anywhere and a fleshy ridge along the belly

Habits

  • Schools around kelp beds, island points and offshore banks, often under bird schools
  • Hunts sardines, anchovies and squid, boiling at the surface in summer
  • Home-guard fish hold deep on structure in cool water; migratory schools roam in warm years
  • One of the strongest pound-for-pound fighters in California waters

Where to find them

  • Catalina, San Clemente and the Channel Islands โ€” the classic yellowtail grounds
  • Coronado Islands and La Jolla kelp off San Diego
  • Offshore banks and paddies in warm-water summers
  • Rocky points and kelp lines along the Baja-facing coast

How to catch them

Fly-lining live bait

Rig: 25-40 lb outfit, live sardine on a small hook, no weight

Bait/lure: Live sardines or greenback mackerel

Key tip: Pick the liveliest bait in the well โ€” a frisky sardine outruns the school and gets bit.

Yo-yo and surface iron

Rig: 40 lb outfit, heavy yo-yo iron deep; light surface iron for boils

Bait/lure: Iron jigs in blue/white and scrambled egg

Key tip: On deep fish, drop to bottom and wind fast through the zone; on boils, cast past and burn it back.
