Identifying features

  • Small pink to orange spots on an olive body — lighter spots than the body colour
  • Spots are smaller and more numerous than on a bull trout
  • White leading edges on the lower fins; spawning males turn orange below
  • Moderately forked tail and a narrower head than a bull trout
  • Look-alike: bull trout are larger inland char with bigger, sparser spots and a broader, flatter head

Habits

  • Follow spawning salmon closely to eat drifting eggs
  • Gather in groups in pools, unlike solitary bull trout
  • Also feed on fry, sculpins and insects through summer
  • Sea-run fish move between estuaries and rivers with the salmon
