Freshwater · Spring through fall; a popular ice-fishing target in winter
Northern Pike
Esox lucius
A toothy ambush predator of northern weed beds, famous for explosive strikes and slime. Pike sit motionless in cover and lunge at spoons, spinnerbaits and large flies passing within range.
Seasons · Peak

Identifying features
- Long, duck-billed snout full of sharp, inward-angled teeth
- Light, bean-shaped oval spots on a dark green-olive body — light marks on dark
- Cheek fully scaled, but only the upper half of the gill cover is scaled
- Dorsal and anal fins set far back, near the tail
- Look-alike: muskellunge is larger, with dark marks on a lighter body — the opposite pattern
Habits
- Solitary ambush hunter holding still in weed cover
- Most active in daylight, especially morning and late afternoon
- Moves shallow to spawn right after ice-out, then to weed edges for summer
- Cooler water keeps pike shallow; heat pushes big fish deeper
Distribution
Where to find them
- Cabbage weed beds and weed-line edges in 5-15 ft
- Shallow spawning bays in spring, right after ice-out
- River backwaters, oxbows and current seams
- Points and saddles between shallow bays and deep water
Where they live
How to catch them
Casting spoons and spinnerbaits
Rig: Flashy lure on a 12 in steel or heavy fluorocarbon leader
Bait/lure: Five-of-diamonds spoons, white spinnerbaits
Key tip: Always finish with a figure-eight at the boat — pike follow to the last foot.
Dead bait under a bobber
Rig: Quick-strike rig under a large slip bobber
Bait/lure: Dead smelt or sucker minnows where legal
Key tip: Best in cold spring water when pike will not chase.
