Saltwater · Summer; major Fraser River runs build from June through August

Sockeye Salmon

Oncorhynchus nerka

The prized red salmon, plankton feeders that travel in dense schools on set migration routes. Sockeye are reluctant biters in the ocean and reward anglers who troll tiny offerings at the exact depth of the school.

Identifying features

  • Slim, torpedo-shaped salmon, typically 4-8 lb, with a steel-blue to greenish back
  • No distinct black spots on the back or tail — the key mark of a sockeye
  • Bright silver sides with fine scales and a deeply forked tail
  • At spawning the body turns brick red and the head green, males with a hooked jaw
  • Look-alike: its landlocked form, kokanee, is the same species but far smaller and never leaves fresh water

Habits

  • Travel in dense schools along predictable deep-water routes
  • Feed mainly on plankton and krill, so they bite out of irritation more than hunger
  • Often roll and jump at the surface while travelling
  • Bite best in early morning and at a slow trolling speed

Where to find them

  • Trolling lanes 40-90 ft deep off major river mouths
  • Deep, steady runs in large salmon rivers
  • Points and narrows where travelling schools are funnelled close to shore

How to catch them

Trolling dodger and short leader

Rig: Dodger or flasher with a short 12-18" leader to a small hoochie

Bait/lure: Red, pink and orange micro hoochies

Key tip: Slow to 1.5-2 mph and stack rods at different depths to find the school.

River drift with yarn

Rig: Long leader with a small yarn tie and weight, drifted through deep runs

Bait/lure: Red and chartreuse yarn

Key tip: Cover water methodically; sockeye travel tight lanes in the current.

Baseline setup

  • Rod: 10'6" trolling rod, medium
  • Line: 25 lb mono or 30 lb braid
  • Terminal: Dodgers, micro hoochies, downriggers

Recommended gear for this species

Trolling rod · Best value

10'6" mooching/trolling rod (medium-heavy)

≈ US$120-180

Long soft action absorbs flasher load and keeps barbless hooks pinned.

Reel · Budget

Line-counter or mooching reel, 300 size

≈ US$70-110

Repeatable depth is half of salmon trolling; a counter makes it repeatable.

Terminal · Budget

11" flasher + anchovy teaser heads (2-pack)

≈ US$25-35

The chinook standard on this coast. Greens and chartreuse first.
